NECO Releases 2025 SSCE External (GCE) Results: Pass Rate, Statistics, and How to Check

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has officially released the NECO Releases 2025 SSCE External 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) External (GCE) results, recording an overall pass rate of 71.63%.

The announcement was made during a press briefing at NECOโ€™s headquarters in Minna, Niger State, by the Registrar and Chief Executive of the Council, Professor Dantani Ibrahim-Wushishi.

According to NECO, the 2025 SSCE External examination was conducted between 26 November and 13 December 2025.

The marking and coordination of scripts took place from 5 January to 21 January 2026, and the results were released 52 days after the final written paper, reflecting an improved result-processing timeline.

Number of Candidates Who Registered and Sat for the Exam

NECO recorded a total of 96,979 registrations for the 2025 SSCE External examination. The gender distribution was as follows:

  • 51,823 male candidates (53.43%)
  • 45,156 female candidates (46.56%)

Out of the total registered candidates, 95,160 candidates eventually sat for the examination:

  • 50,785 males (53.36%)
  • 44,375 females (46.63%)

Performance in English Language and Mathematics

Performance statistics in the core subjects show encouraging outcomes:

English Language

  • 93,425 candidates sat for English Language
  • 73,167 candidates (78.32%) achieved credit level and above

Mathematics

  • 93,330 candidates wrote Mathematics
  • 85,256 candidates (91.35%) earned credit level and above

Five-Credit Result Statistics

NECO released two major benchmarks for candidates who obtained at least five credits:

  • 68,166 candidates (71.63%) earned five credits and above including English Language and Mathematics
  • 82,082 candidates (86.26%) earned five credits and above without the compulsory English and Mathematics requirement

These results are significant for candidates seeking admission into higher institutions.

Purpose of the NECO SSCE External (GCE)

The Registrar explained that the SSCE External examination provides an alternative opportunity for candidates who wish to improve their results for university, polytechnic, college of education, and other tertiary institution admissions both within and outside Nigeria.

The examination covered 16 subjects, and NECO described the 2025 result release as part of its ongoing commitment to credible, reliable, and transparent assessments.

Examination Malpractice Cases and Sanctions

NECO also disclosed details regarding examination misconduct during the 2025 SSCE External exam.

  • 9,016 candidates were booked for various malpractice offences
  • This represents a 31.7% increase compared to 6,160 cases recorded in 2024

Disciplinary Actions Taken

  • Five supervisors were recommended for blacklisting for aiding examination malpractice:
    • Two from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)
    • One each from Kano, Adamawa, and Ondo States
  • Four examination centres were recommended for derecognition due to whole-centre malpractice:
    • Two centres in Niger State
    • One centre each in Yobe and Kano States
