The decision, reached during plenary on Tuesday, aims to expand access to higher education and strengthen academic development across key regions of the country.

According to lawmakers, the creation of the new universities will help bridge educational gaps, support research, and provide more opportunities for young Nigerians to pursue tertiary education.

Locations of the Newly Approved Federal Universities

The newly approved universities will be located in the following states:

• Borno State – Federal University, Biu
• Imo State – Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri
• Kaduna State – Federal University of Technology, Kaduna
• Kano State – Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano

The approval followed the adoption of a report presented by Rep. Abubakar Fulata (APC–Jigawa), Chairman of the House Committee on University Education, after the House considered four separate education-related bills.

Details of the Approved Bills

The following bills were passed to facilitate the establishment of the new universities:

1. A Bill to repeal the Federal Polytechnic, Kaduna Act and establish the Federal University of Technology, Kaduna.
2. A Bill to repeal the Nigerian Army University, Biu (Act 2020) and enact the Federal University, Biu, Borno State.
3. A Bill to establish the Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri, Imo State.
4. A Bill to establish the Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano State.

Rep. Fulata explained that the Federal University of Technology, Kaduna will focus on practical science and technology training, while the Alvan Ikoku University of Education will specialise in teacher education and classroom innovation.

Next Steps: Senate Concurrence and Presidential Assent

Following the House’s approval, the bills will now be transmitted to the Senate for concurrence. Once passed by the Senate, they will be forwarded to the President for assent, officially bringing the universities into existence.

Rep. Fulata added that each of the new universities would contribute to Nigeria’s educational growth by promoting academic research, innovation, and professional development in various fields.

Impact on Nigeria’s Higher Education

The establishment of these universities is part of the government’s broader effort to improve access to tertiary education, particularly in regions with limited university capacity.
